In Switzerland the Segway PT model i2 and x2 are considered to be small motorbikes and can be driven with a driver’s licence Category A1 to 45 km/hr (Scooter from 16 years) or Category B (Car). The Segway PT is equipped with the Swiss Road Kit and is approved for driving on Swiss roads. Segway PT drivers are permitted to use the same traffic ways as scooters and motorbikes (not small mopeds!). As the Swiss Road Kit includes lights, driving at night is also problem free.
Since the middle of 2011, a traffic department (Bundesamtes for Roads (ASTRA)) exception provision permits Segway PT’s to be driven on bikeways and strips. Details of this provision are available here (in german).
For vehicles up to 20 km/hr there is no legal requirement to wear a helmet. Segway Switzerland recommends, however, doing this for your own personal safety.
Position of Segway Switzerland
Segway Switzerland is committed to sensible legislation for innovative electric vehicles. We are of the opinion that safety and use of the vehicle will increase and administrative expenditure can be reduced. As such, in future the Personal Transporter will be classed as a bicycle or E-bike. We use our contacts at authorities and in politics to ensure our position is heard. See our position (in german) here.
